Design Project Examples

This Design Project calls for a memorial to the Bali Bombing victims. The series of images here show how modern finishes are able to simulate real metal castings.

The pattern was shaped in clay, a plastic mould formed over it, and cast in plaster. When the plaster had dried (overnight) and removed from the mould, it looked like this:

The 'lower' parts of the casting were painted in black, with the edges 'washed' out to take away the sharp line between the black paint and the white plaster.

The casting was painted with metallic paint (gold and bronze) and some green pigment powder brushed into the 'lower' parts. It was then photographed with a digital camera, and using a graphics program (Micrographics Picture Publisher) the casting was 'cut' out carefully and saved.

A look through a travel brochure showed some suitable backgrounds.

The background photograph was scanned, and the image of the casting was pasted over it, and positioned. Some touching up to make a green lawn, and a shadow, was necessary.

The same process was used with another background. After some consultation with others in the class, it will be possible to select the better one, and use this one in your presentation.
