Design Project Examples

The Design Project for freeway noise barriers in pre-cast concrete is shown here, from the clay pattern to the finished image presented to the review panel.

Several sketches were done, and some cut out on paper to test the 'flow' design asked for in the design brief. The pattern was shaped in clay, and a plastic mould formed over it.

A panel was then cast in the mould using casting plaster. When it was dry (about overnight) several more were cast in the same mould.

The panels were painted using a 50/50 water/aqua clear mixture with colour powders. The water reduces the gloss finish, and allows the colour to be absorbed into the plaster better. Some 'clay' colour powder was brushed on dry, to give it a sandy look.

The panels were arranged (leaning on a piece of wood), and a model car placed in front. It was then photographed with a digital camera, and this is the image:

Using a graphics program, (in this case Micrografx Picture Publisher), and the tool called 'crop', the required image was selected, and all the unwanted part of the image disappeared ...

leaving an image like this:
This image was then copied and held on the 'clipboard' until the background was ready.

Now for some sky. Using the digital camera again, an image of the sky was taken, (including the back of the house and washing on the line.)

The freeway panels were 'pasted' onto the sky image, and positioned originally to hide the house roof ...

until I experimented a bit, and found that things looked much better with a bit of roof showing.

The image was then cropped, and saved ready for presenting to the review panel.
