Well-being - how to develop it

Well-being cannot be taught using traditional approaches. The development of well-being takes place in the same way that we learn to walk and communicate - intuitive, or following the brain's natural learning process. Essentially, this learning process:

  • takes place in a context, not in isolation
  • takes place when the learner is fully engaged, focused, immersed in the activity, and excited about the outcome
  • is one in which failure is not considered

The natural learning process (often called 'stealth learning' ) is evident when people play computer games:

In today's society, computer games are fulfilling genuine human needs that the real world is currently unable to supply. Games are providing rewards that reality is not. They are teaching and inspiring and engaging us in ways that reality is not. They are bringing us together in ways that reality is not.

Reality Is Broken: why games make us better and how they can change the world Jane McGonigal, Penguin Press, 2011

The avec projects provide a context for young people to learn naturally - to learn those vital strategies to build emotional resilience and maintain well-being.
